Testing of Microdisk Lasers

At USC, microdisk lasers are tested using sophisticated measurement equipment. The lasers are mounted on a probe stage and current is injected through very fine probe tips.
These probe tips are carefully placed on the contact pads of the laser diodes by using micropositioners and looking through a microscope or by using a monitor in conjunction with a vidicon camera. The electrical characterization data is acquired onto a computer and can subsequently be analyzed.
The optical characterization data is also analyzed, by using an optical spectrum analyzer. The spectral dependence of light emitted from the lasers is measured by looking for the presence of a lasing resonance.Using Labview, all these measurements can be automated and data downloaded onto the computer for further analysis.Click here to view video clip (6.92 MB)
